5 Tips For Loading Your Storage Unit Like a Pro
When you need to store items in a storage unit, a little planning and organization goes a long way. It pays to rent a properly sized unit with easy access and to use as much of your available space as possible.
Following these 5 simple tips for loading your storage unit will help you get the most bang for your buck.
- Consider Unit Access -
Storage facilities vary. Look for a unit that is easily accessible. Pulling your truck right up to your roll-up door is a huge advantage. Hallways and elevators can easily turn a one hour job into a three hour job. Absolutely avoid storage units on the second floor with no elevator access. - Consider Unit Size -
If your unit is too small, you've wasted your time. If it's too big, your're wasting your money. Always box everything up and be ready to move prior to selecting your unit. Better yet, stack everything possible in the garage prior to moving day. This will give you the best idea of what size to get. - Stack to the Roof -
Most storage units have a high ceiling. Use this to your advantage. Long items like couches can stand on end. Sturdy items like dressers should be used as a base. Look for opportunities to stack to the roof. Make sure everything in a stack can support whats on top of it. You don't want to return to your unit to find that a bottom-box collapsed! - Move Things Around -
Use as much space around your unit as you can get away with. It's a good idea to pull light and unstable items out of the truck and set them aside. This gives you more options while loading your unit. An item that stumps you now will fit perfectly later. If you make a mistake, back up and fix it. - Start Strong -
Try to load the unit in rows starting in the back. The first items into the unit should build a solid foundation across the back wall. A little patience with your first row or two will pay off. You'll be surprised by how many boxes, floor lamps, chairs, etc that you can fit on top of a washer/dryer, table. and a couple of dressers.
